Cobras kick off the season with a win in their home opener!
The Chelmsford Cobras opened their season against local rivals Cambridge, a team they had never beaten before. Understandably, there were a few nerves before face-off, but those quickly disappeared as the Cobras delivered a determined, disciplined and relentless performance.
First Period
Cambridge opened the scoring at 03:57, but the Cobras responded just 90 seconds later. 17 Tereza Plankova was in exactly the right place at the right time to score Chelmsford’s first goal of the game, and the season, after a great backhand pass from 15 Jenny Shepherd.
At 07:24, while killing a penalty, 80 Zinnia Quilter deflected the puck from the Cobras’ zone. It travelled the length of the ice and somehow found the net, putting Chelmsford ahead.
Captain 18 Charmaine Easton then added two goals: a great knock-in at 16:50, assisted by 17 Tereza Plankova and 15 Jenny Shepherd, followed by a textbook wraparound at 17:31, assisted by 34 Henrietta Telford.
Throughout the period, the Cobras remained determined and composed. They moved the puck well, maintained a strong defensive gap and closed down Cambridge attacks quickly. The forwards worked tirelessly tracking back to support the defence.
Second Period
The Cobras continued to apply pressure in the second period, moving the puck and supporting each other throughout the ice.
At 37:50, 15 Jenny Shepherd scored Chelmsford’s fifth goal, assisted by 80 Zinnia Quilter.
Third Period
The Cobras entered the final period with the same determination and work rate. They continued to move the puck effectively, defend as a unit and close down Cambridge attacks before they could develop. The forwards worked relentlessly to track back and support the defence, maintaining the layers that had been so effective all game.
Cambridge scored their second and final goal at 51:13, but Chelmsford stayed composed and held firm to secure a fantastic 5–2 victory.
The Cobras’ penalty kill was outstanding. Despite taking 10 minutes in penalties, every penalty was killed with pressure, intensity and determination. More often than not, the team forced turnovers in the neutral zone or at the top of the defensive zone. Our penalty killers were absolutely fantastic.
Our goalie also had a brilliant game, facing 25 shots and recording a 92% save percentage. And just like that, the bar has been set!
A huge thank you to all the spectators who came out to support the Cobras, to the whole team for giving everything and delivering such a great game, and to everyone who helped make the match possible.
What a way to start the season—up the Cobras!
